Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, St. Martinville, Louisiana (Dec. 7- 12, 2015)

We were a little concerned after leaving the last bug-infested campground that this stop could be a repeat performance. After arriving back in southern Louisiana we were pleasantly surprised – minimal bugs and a beautiful setting! It was nice to be back, driving through the sugarcane fields and watching the harvest.

2015-12-09 13.49.59   Located about 18 miles east of St. Martinsville and part of the original Atchafalaya Swamp Basin, Lake Fausse Pointe State Park has as much nature as you can ask for. Hike the trails through cypress swampland and forest while viewing wildlife in their natural habitat. The park has waterfront cabins, RV sites, and primitive camp sites.

We picked an RV site along the waterway that even had it’s own dock for your boat.  image   image  image

They have boats, canoes, and kayaks available for rent.image

The park is home to deer, raccoons, black bears, cottonmouth snakes, armadillos, alligators and bobcats.

This is a getaway from it all type of park, a place you can disconnect from everything. Our cell phones had limited service and just a few TV channels to choose from.

We still have pecans from our Fredericksburg stop, so we cracked a few to leave out for the squirrels – even though these were some big fat critters. They really didn’t need any supplements.

Coming back to the park after dark was a treat, normally there would be a raccoon or possum roaming around whenever we drove through.

Getting the Christmas Spirit

One evening we took a drive down to Patterson to check out the town’s Christmas light display. I should have looked at where Patterson was on the map before we just took off driving – after an hour of driving and seeing signs for Morgan City I realized we were almost to the coast! It was all worth it after stopping for the lights!

Day Trips to the Tabasco Factory/Company Store and the Zoosiana Zoo of Acadiana

  • We wanted to get out for a day trip and Avery Island was an area we always enjoyed visiting, back in the day… so we headed off to the Tabasco factory. Once we arrived, we noticed that the factory tours were not available until January. So browsing the factory store was about all we could do. We did get a little shopping done. If we had visited during the spring, the beautiful gardens at Avery Island would have a great place for a walk.
